Wamp Reflects On London Attacks

July 8, 2005

The terrorist attack in London is a stark and gruesome reminder that terrorists continue to plot against the United States and its allies around the world.  Almost four years after September 11 2001, we are certainly not yet out of the woods.

Terrorists are a threat to every decent people of the world.  It is important this attack unifies us and gives us more resolve than ever against terror. We must stay on the offensive.  In Great Britain, there are families going through the worst days of their lives. We need to be with them spiritually and economically, just as they were with us after 9/11.

As a member of the House Appropriations Committee on Homeland Security, it is hard to say how much is enough.  While we should thank the Department of Homeland Security for the vital work they do, vulnerabilities still exist.  We saw in Spain last year and now we see in Great Britain that mass transit continues to be an attractive target for terrorists.

In the upcoming months, we need to learn from this attack, assess potential weaknesses in our defenses, and continue to stand with our British allies during this tragic time.
