Compromise Needed That Funds Infrastructure And Holds Line on Taxes

April 5, 2004

Funding for our nation's transportation infrastructure is one of my top priorities.  There is no doubt that improvements are needed on our highways, bridges and roads to increase driving safety and ease congestion.

Our increasing dependence on foreign oil and uncertainty in the Middle East has left American consumers more vulnerable to price fluctuations in the international market.  A federal gas tax increase would be an added burden on consumers at a time when we are trying to recover from an economic slowdown and establish peace abroad.

We must pursue a compromise that makes necessary infrastructure improvements while "holding the line" on taxes.  Meeting transportation needs for East Tennessee while being a good steward of tax dollars will continue to be a high priority for me as Congress considers the highway bill.
