Legislation Would Protect Our Religious Liberties

December 1, 2003

The government should encourage, not undermine the role of religion and faith in this country.  America was founded on the principle of freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.  The purpose of the First Amendment was to rule out the establishment of a particular religion and to prohibit the government from discriminating against one religion by favoring another.  It was never intended to mandate that government ban religious expressions or deny the existence of God.

We must continue to protect fundamental religious liberties that are so important to the spiritual health of this nation.  That is why I am a cosponsor of the Safeguarding Our Religious Liberties Act, H.R. 3190.  This bill would protect states' rights to display the Ten Commandments, use "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, and keep "In God we Trust" in our national motto.

We cannot sit idly by as the courts try to rewrite our heritage and traditions.  I will keep fighting to help ensure that our customs are protected and preserved to pass down to our children.
