Protecting Civil Liberties

March 7, 2003

Our founding fathers guaranteed the liberties of the American people and wanted to protect them from an intrusive government.  During my career in Congress, I have always stayed true to this principle and have advocated limited government and the protection of civil liberties.  I have worked hard to place accountability and restrictions on intrusive projects such as the "Total Information Awareness" program.  Our efforts paid off and we were able to ban funding for this program and prohibit deployment of this technology against citizens in the United States without express Congressional approval.

There has been a rumor that a "Domestic Enhancement Security Act" or "Patriot Act II" will be introduced in Congress this year.  I respect the importance of our God-given natural rights.  I will be vigilant in this defense.

I agree with Ronald Reagan that "government that is big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you've got."  I will continue to fight for you civil rights and will keep working to contain the abuses of big government.  While law enforcement needs all of the tools available to enforce the criminal code, the government should not infringe on our civil liberties.
