Wamp Questions Privacy Invasions in Laundering Bill
August 9, 2000
Congressman Zach Wamp has strongly questioned a pending bill purportedly designed to catch international money launderers.
"This bill has a good purpose - catching people who are trying to hide money gained from illegal activities - but it could have a bad result: infringing on the privacy of good law-abiding citizens," Wamp said. "That's why I have some real concerns.
?The International Counter-Money Laundering Act, H.R. 3886, could violate financial privacy and grant too much power to the Executive Branch.
"H.R. 3886 is an international version of the "Know Your Customer" regulations that would continue the trend toward more intrusion into our private lives by the federal government. I have consistently voted against "Know Your Customer" regulations because this sort of Big Brother approach to government is not what the Founding Fathers intended when they created a government based upon states' rights and personal responsibility.
"I will continue to support efforts to limit the role of the federal government while insisting that our privacy is protected."
