Ecstasy is NOT a ?fun club drug?

August 21, 2001

Ecstasy dealers are selling more than just a drug - they are selling a lie. The truth is, Ecstasy is not a "fun club drug." Young people cannot get high on Ecstasy without harming themselves.

Unfortunately, the use of this illegal drug is rising because teenagers believe it is a safe way to get high and stay energized. Ecstasy acts like both a stimulant and a hallucinogen, making the user hyperactive with a distorted concept of time and perception. It can cause brain damage, potentially fatal dehydration and overheating, heart attacks and strokes. Through research, we have learned that it is also highly addictive and repeated, prolonged use of Ecstasy can lead to confusion, depression, sleep problems, persistent anxiety, aggressive and impulsive behavior and memory impairment.

What we don't know about the effects of Ecstasy is even more frightening. That's why we must provide assistance to communities and law enforcement agencies for education and outreach to our young folks. We must get the word out about the dangers of this drug before one more young person dies at a party.
