Freedom of Religion, Not Freedom FROM Religion

July 12, 2000

Our country was founded on the principle of freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. The government should encourage, not undermine, the role of religion and faith in this country. I very strongly disagree with the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision against student-led prayer.

I signed onto a "friend of the court" brief in connection with the legal fight surrounding this decision. It stated my deep interest in making sure religious speech by students in our public schools is appropriately protected and discrimination against religious organizations, persons, and speech is prevented.

The intent of our founding fathers was to avoid government-dictated religion, but voluntary prayer led by students without coercion is basic to our existence as a nation. Americans should be able to worship freely, and decisions like this chip away at our basic rights. While I am disappointed by this decision, I will continue working to protect the fundamental religious liberties that are so important to the spiritual health of this nation.
