Support Second Amendment Rights

April 24, 2001

It is absurd that some folks believe we can make society safer by denying law-abiding citizens the right to defend themselves with a firearm. Criminals are the root cause of crime and violence in Tennessee, not guns.

We must honor and uphold our Constitution. That is why I am a cosponsor of HR 31, the Citizens' Self-Defense Act. This bill reaffirms the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms and puts criminals everywhere on notice that law-abiding citizens can and will use deadly force, when necessary, to defend themselves and their loved ones.

HR 31 reinforces the idea that a person not prohibited under the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act from receiving a firearm shall have the right to obtain firearms for security and to use firearms in defense of self or family.

One of the protections specifically stated in our Bill of Rights, second only to the freedom of speech is that "...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." The Constitution is clear about this. I will continue to support and vote for legislation that protects our right to bear arms.
