Wamp Cosponsors Bill To Establish National Law Enforcement Museum

October 4, 2000

Since the first law enforcement fatality in 1792, more than 15,000 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty. On average, one police officer is killed somewhere in America nearly every other day. Today, approximately 740,000 men and women put their lives on the line each and every day for our protection and safety.

Despite this incredible record of service and sacrifice, too many Americans lack a true understanding and appreciation of law enforcement's worth to our country. I have cosponsored a bill to establish a National Law Enforcement Museum on Federal land across the street from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

The museum will be constructed with private funds and will also include a research repository for information to promote law enforcement safety.

This legislation is a fitting tribute and a good way to honor our men and women in blue. Law enforcement is a very dangerous and admirable career, and we need to thank these veterans of the domestic streets with honors like this museum.
