Federal Judges Should Follow Law, Not Make Law

January 20, 2004
Too many federal judges have decided to interpret the Constitution according to their own personal ideology. The practice of judicial activism has threatened some of our most cherished liberties. The government should encourage, not undermine, the role of religion and faith in this country.

Recent rulings by some federal judges that seek to mandate that government ban religious expressions or even deny the existence of God are clearly out of step with the values held by a majority of Americans and the history of the founding of our country. When it comes to religion, the intent of founding fathers was to avoid government dictated religion. People of all faiths should be able to freely practice their religious beliefs in a place of worship, school, or work. This country was founded on the principle of freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.

The time may have come to consider some reforms to the Federal Judicial system to prevent radical judges from imposing their extremist views on our society. Removing lifetime appointments to the federal bench is one proposal that would help make judges more accountable for their actions. I have also cosponsored legislation which would help protect states' rights to display the Ten Commandments, use "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, and keep "In God we Trust" in our national motto.

We cannot sit idly by as the courts try to rewrite our heritage and traditions. I will keep fighting to ensure that our customs are protected to pass down to our children.
