Wamp Supports English Only Ballots

June 15, 2006

Making English the official language of the United States is the right thing to do.  All official government business should be conducted in English, including naturalization ceremonies.  Trying to operate a bilingual government could hurt the unity of our nation.

An amendment to remove bilingual ballot requirements from the Voting Rights Reauthorization Act was offered when the bill was before the Judiciary Committee.  I strongly support this proposal and look forward to supporting it should it be offered again on the House floor.

Declaring English to be America's sole official language can help us avoid these problems in the future.  I am also a co-sponsor of H.R. 997, the English Language Unity Act, which would make English the official language.
