Wamp Cosponsors Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act

June 5, 2006

Thousands of vehicle owners who are being turned away from local repair shops.  They are being denied the choice of working on their own cars, or the choice of replacement parts because information necessary to make these repairs is not readily available.

The 1990 Clean Air Act mandated that vehicle manufacturers install computers systems in all cars made after 1993 to monitor their emissions.  This language had the unintended consequence of making the automobile manufacturers the gatekeepers of who can repair or produce replacement parts for the vehicles.

The Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act will require manufacturers of vehicles sold in the United States to disclose to the vehicle owner, repair facilities, and the Federal Trade Commission the information necessary to diagnose, service, or repair the vehicle.  I am a cosponsor of this important legislation to protect local repair facilities from unfair business practices.
