Wamp Supports Amendment to Protect Classified Information

May 3, 2006

Classified information is not available to the general public for a reason and we must be vigilant to protect it.  Allowing the exposure of certain information could reveal military weaknesses and aid terrorist in their war against America.

To protect classified information, I gave my strong support to an amendment to the Intelligence Authorization Act that stipulates that any federal employee who is found guilty of leaking classified information to the press will be stripped of his pension.  This is a reasonable and effective step to discourage the dangerous practice of leaking classified information.

One of the core strengths of our great nation is the freedom of speech protected by the First Amendment.  However, we must not be reckless with this freedom.
