We should not reward illegal immigrants with blanket amnesty

September 27, 2001

Both legal and illegal immigrants continue to pour into the United States. I have received many complaints about the number of illegal immigrants entering the country.

The Administration's immigration task force, headed by Secretary of State Colin Powell and Attorney General John Ashcroft, has made many recommendations to President Bush about how to overhaul the foreign worker program and to whom those changes should apply, specifically folks from Mexico, Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, and Honduras.

While this is just the beginning of a long debate, we should not reward illegal immigrants with blanket amnesty. Without enforcing the immigration laws on the books, we show contempt for those that have legally entered the country. Fortunately, President Bush has stated his opposition to a comprehensive amnesty plan.

There are no easy quick fixes to this problem. President Bush, the Congress and the Immigration and Naturalization Service will work hard to find answers that will benefit all Americans.
