Wamp Cosponsors Identity Theft Prevention Act

March 17, 2003

Identity theft is certainly a growing problem in this country.  In an age when information and records are available on the Internet, it is important that you keep your Social Security number as secret as possible.  Criminals can easily obtain a victim's Social Security number and access bank accounts, obtain credit cards, and assume a false identity.

I am a cosponsor of H.R. 220, the Identity Theft Prevention Act of 2003, which takes steps to protect the American people from identity theft.  H.R. 220 would require the Social Security Administration to issue all Americans new Social Security numbers within five years after enactment of this bill.  Once issued, this number would be the sole legal property of the recipient.  The Social Security Administration would be forbidden to divulge the numbers for any purposes not related to the Social Security Administration.

I am dedicated to protecting our freedoms and privacy.  H.R. 220 will help ensure Americans can enjoy real personal and financial privacy.
