Wamp Cosponsors Legislation to Stop the Acceptance of Foreign ID Cards

April 2, 2003

The number of immigrants entering this country is astounding.  We must be careful that those who enter our country go through extensive screening procedures to avoid another tragedy reminiscent of September 11th. Unsecured and unidentifiable documents like the Matricula Consular, which are issued to Mexican nationals by the Mexican government, should not be accepted as proof of identification by state, local or federal agencies.

I have cosponsored H.R. 502 to end this practice.  This bill would discontinue the acceptance of foreign identification cards, like Matricular Consular, which makes it harder for illegal aliens to receive Federal benefits.

I am also in favor of implementing stricter visa requirements and arresting and deporting those who are found to be in violation of their visas. We must take steps now to make sure that the events of September 11th are not repeated.
