Human Genome Shouldn't Be Used to Discriminate

August 20, 2003

As we approach the completion of mapping the human genome, we must be careful to use information for the good of man, not to discriminate in any way.  Advances in genetic research hold tremendous hope for gene therapies to cure certain diseases, but these developments also raise complex legal questions that have yet to be answered.

I am an original cosponsor of the Genetic Nondiscrimination in Health Insurance and Employment Act, H.R. 1910, which prevents discrimination on the basis of protected genetic information.  A person's genetic predisposition to a disease should not be used to prevent access to health insurance or employment.
