House Passes Ban On Horse Slaughter

September 20, 2006
The inhumane treatment of animals is unacceptable. Each year, nearly 90,000 horses are slaughtered in the United States and exported to European and Asian counties where horse meat is considered a delicacy. During the slaughtering process these horses are often subjected to cruel and inhumane conditions.

As a member of the Congressional Horse Caucus, I cosponsored the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, which prohibits the transportation, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of any horse to be slaughtered for human consumption. When this bill came before the House of Representatives, it passed with my strong support by a vote of 263 to 146. It is now before the Senate for consideration.

These beautiful creatures are an important part of our American heritage and must be protected.
