Health Savings Accounts Are Essential For Health Care Reform

February 25, 2004

Without a doubt, our health care system is in a crisis and people are rightly demanding solutions.  The cost of medical insurance continues to rise and the struggle to pay for quality health care is becoming more difficult for everyone.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of uninsured in America has risen to over 41 million, many of whom work for or depend on small employers who lack the ability to provide health benefits for their workers.

For too long, consumers have relied on low-deductible, high premium health care plans to cover their health care expenses because our tax code favors these plans.  By taking health care decisions away from consumers and placing them in the hands of insurance companies, these plans have contributed to the skyrocketing cost of health care in this country.

Health Savings Accounts (HSA’s) put health care decisions where they should be, in the hands of patients.  This encourages consumers to spend their health care dollars wisely and promotes savings.  These plans are also an important option for the millions of Americans who do not have employer-provided health insurance.  HSA’s should be part of any real reform of our health care system.
