Preserving and Improving Head Start In the Department Of Education

April 9, 2003

The first few years of our children's lives are the most crucial. They have a tremendous impact on who they are and what they will become in life.  I am committed to giving our children the tools they need early in life to become successful members of our society.  I have been a strong supporter of Head Start since elected to Congress.  It is one of the most important and successful functions of the federal education system.

I support the idea of giving more educational opportunities to children in the program.  But I also want to make sure such a move would not have a negative impact on the equally important social services Head Start provides.  Many Members of Congress are studying the President's proposal carefully.  As a member of the House Committee on Appropriations, which oversee federal spending on Head Start, I will work closely with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to make sure this important program receives the support it needs and continues to be successful for many young Americans.
