Legislation Would End Prohibition On Face-to-face Firearm Sales

October 6, 2003

The government, in an effort to protect its citizens, sometimes takes steps that infringe on those citizens' rights and actually inhibit public safety and national security.  The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms' prohibition of face-to-face dealing is one such case.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms prohibits federally licensed gun dealers from different states from trading firearms.  This prohibition makes it necessary for unlicensed individuals to ship the firearms between dealers.  Common sense argues that face-to-face sale and transfer of a firearm by two dealers who have been licensed by the government would be much safer than forcing the firearms to be shipped through unlicensed hands.

I have decided to cosponsor Rep. Rick Renzi bill, H.R. 2906, which will allow face-to-face firearm sales between federally licensed dealers.  One of the rights specifically protected in our bill of rights, second only to the freedom of speech is that "...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."  The Constitution is clear about this.  I will continue to support and vote for legislation that protects your right to bear arms.
