A New Postal Stamp To Honor the Memories of Those We Lost in the September 11th Attacks

September 25, 2001

Our nation is beginning its long recovery from the attacks on September 11th. Countless people have lined up to give blood, donated supplies, and are flying flags from their homes and businesses. This outpouring of compassion and sympathy has been a truly American response to last week's tragic events.

My thoughts and prayers are with all Americans; especially those who lost loved ones in the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the heroes aboard United Airlines Flight 93. While we still do not know the full extent of the tragic loss of life, we do know that folks directly affected by the attacks will be left with more bills to pay and less income. That's why I have cosponsored a bill that would authorize a new postal stamp to honor the memories of those we lost, and raise money to help their families.

The stamp would be a semipostal stamp, sold at 40 each. The additional revenue above the first class rate of 34 would be distributed to the victims' families. This would give Americans a simple way to donate to relief efforts and directly help these families.

Clearly, no amount of money we raise would ever make up for the terrible loss our fellow Americans have suffered, but we can help make their lives easier as they mourn their loved ones and begin to rebuild their lives.
