Post Service needs to take stock

July 16, 2001

Since our country was founded, the federal government has delivered the mail. The United States Postal Service (USPS) provides an important service to make sure our citizens can stay in touch with one another.

Any institution as old as the Postal Service needs to take stock and implement reforms from time to time. The USPS recently announced that in order to remain competitive, it will study ways to cut costs without raising rates. This includes looking into the pluses and minuses of delivering mail only Monday through Friday.

"I am very interested in the results of this study," Wamp said. "I also look forward to working with my colleagues who serve on the Postal Service Subcommittee to see that the USPS does everything within its power to hold down costs and modernize operations without sacrificing customer service or burdening average citizens with higher prices."
