Wamp Comments on Bush Speech

February 27, 2001

The President's approach is reasonable because it uses part of the budget surplus to stimulate our sagging economy and holds spending increases down to more responsible levels. This combination of fiscal restraint and tax relief to put money back in the hands of hard working Americans is the formula for success as we try to recover from a nine-month downturn in the economy.

The President's approach is responsible because under his plan, we will pay down the debt to the lowest percentage of our economy since World War I, and we will not spend any of the Social Security and Medicare money. His budget also addresses such urgent priorities as improving education and military pay.

I am thrilled to have a President who inspires my confidence, and I consider it a personal joy to know him as we work together to restore dignity and honor to the office of the presidency.
