No Third Term for Former President Clinton

January 29, 2001

As President Bush was sworn in, President Clinton returned to civilian life.

In some circles, there has been talk of Clinton seeking a third presidential term but the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution clearly states that "no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice." It further states that "no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."

In the past two years, three bills were introduced which would have repealed this amendment. House Joint Resolutions 17, 24 and 38 would have allowed someone to be President for more than two terms. Since these constitutional amendments never even came to the floor for a vote, no one can serve as President of the United States for more than two terms.
