Democratic Government Rests on Individual Freedom

September 13, 2002

The oppression of people anywhere based upon their religious beliefs is something we must work to end. While the United States cannot always control what goes on in other countries, we should use our influence as the greatest country in the world to protect the religious liberties of everyone. It is vital for those of us who enjoy the right to freely worship to speak up on behalf of those who are denied that right. Our economic power gives us the ability to wield great influence with other nations, and we should use this power for good.

History has proven that communism does not work. This form of government does not allow for even the most basic freedoms that should be available to all peoples of the world. Communist governments are infamous for suppressing religious, political and economic freedoms and communist economies are terribly inefficient and wasteful.

Most of the nations in the world that are economically and politically sound have governments that are based on democratic principles because democracies rest on the premise that individual freedom and participation are essential to government. When the human spirit is left free of the chains of an oppressive government, freedom and prosperity are the inevitable results.
