Wamp Opposes Trade Relations with China

June 6, 2001

Congressman Zach Wamp has opposed extending Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) to the People's Republic of China because of serious problems with that government's conduct.

"While the United States trades with China, its leaders prepare for war against the United States and Taiwan." Wamp said. "The Chinese build nuclear weapons and point them at our cities, abuse their own citizens, violate international trade laws, detain visiting scholars and take our military personnel hostage. The Chinese government has always behaved like a rogue nation and should not be treated like one of America's "most favored" friends.

"I am an original co-sponsor of H.R. 1467, to withdraw PNTR from China." Wamp said. "If China wants trade; it should begin behaving like a civilized member of the world community."
