The Supreme Court Should Not Cite Foreign Rulings

August 13, 2003

When it comes to the Constitution, I try to be a strict constructionist and believe that the Founding Fathers intended our leaders and judges to adhere to the letter of the law.  That means upholding and protecting the Constitution of the United States, not a foreign country.

The Supreme Court's citing of foreign laws in support of its recent ruling on Texas's sodomy statutes sets a disturbing precedent that threatens the sovereignty of our country.  Using past court rulings decided in the United States as a guide for current cases is a standard practice, but not verdicts determined by foreign courts.  The U.S. Constitution is not the cornerstone of these rulings and they do not represent what is in the best interest of the American people.

We must continue to do all we can to protect the dominion of our laws and the independence of our judicial system.
