Wamp Leads Charge On A Fitter America

May 23, 2005

Fitness needs to be more a part of every Americans daily life.  As co-chairman of the Congressional Fitness Caucus, Congressman Wamp continues to take the lead for a healthier America, encouraging Americans onto healthier lives from their childhood through adulthood.

Physical exercise is a good habit that needs to be part of every Americans? life, and we should start emphasizing this practice in our children.  No Child Left Behind was a good first step, but the landmark policy needs to be amended so it includes physical education standards in order for children to develop fitness-friendly habits that will last a lifetime.  In addition, Congressman Wamp helped the Nike Corporation launch a new initiative called NikeGo Head Start, which aims to make exercise more fun for preschool children.

Continuing healthy living into adulthood is the next step.  Wamp has sponsored legislation that would create tax incentives for employers who provide health center benefits for their employees. Active employees require lower medical expenses ranging from $80 to $500 per person.

"People who exercise regularly are not only healthier but also end up being happier and more effective employees," said Congressman Wamp.
