Wamp Defends EPA Response To 9/11

October 1, 2003

The terrorist attacks of September 11th were unlike any threat our country has faced.  At Ground Zero, federal, state, and local authorities had to make important decisions with limited information amid a great deal of confusion and disarray.

The report you mentioned was issued by the Inspector General of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding the agency's 9/11 response.  While important lessons have been learned, the report is clear that the EPA properly followed all applicable laws in analyzing and controlling health risks.

Unfortunately, some have painted EPA's 9/11 response in a partisan context for political advantage, especially in the United States Senate.  Overall, the comprehensive response of government agencies and leaders on both sides of the aisle was excellent considering so much uncertainty.  It is my hope our country and its leaders will remained focused on the best way to protect America in the future.
