Wamp Calls for Balanced Approach to Environment

March 12, 2001

As a strong supporter of reasonable environmental protections, I know that the best way to preserve the incredible flora and fauna in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is to make sure our laws and policies are based on sound science and that federal laws protect natural resources as much as possible. We must ensure a cleaner, safer and healthier America so that we can all enjoy the natural areas of our country.

Oil exploration in ANWR has been debated for over 40 years. Higher prices for oil and natural gas have led to renewed interest in drilling since the previous Administration failed to establish national energy policy for America to deal with the rising cost of fuel and energy supply shortages. We must have a comprehensive energy policy that increases domestic energy production but also one that protects and preserves our environment in a balanced, responsible way.

For all these reasons, I have taken the lead in a congressional effort to identify and promote cutting-edge, clean and renewable energy. As the co-chair of the House Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Caucus, I am committed to build a bipartisan coalition to enhance the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency as a critical component of our nation's economic and environmental security.

Renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies will not alone solve our country's energy problems, but they can provide real solutions to many of the problems we are facing today. The Congress must make a serious effort at addressing America's energy needs. This will include debate on legislation aimed at opening up ANWR. I plan to keep an open mind throughout the debate.
