Wamp Backs Legislation to Secure Energy for the Future

April 14, 2003

As the Co-chairman of the House Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Caucus, Congressman Zach Wamp (R-TN) gave his support to the energy package that passed the House of Representatives today.  The measure promotes greater economic and national security through conservation, exploration, energy efficiency and innovation.

"America needs a balanced energy plan to promote new innovations in renewable energy sources and to put an end to unpredictable price fluctuations.  Too many of our energy sources are in the hands of unstable nations, which is a serious threat to our national security as well as to our way of life.  We must invest in renewable energy sources and technologies that save energy," said Wamp.

"The energy crisis is both a demand and supply problem.  We must slow down the growth in demand and increase the supply of energy. A balanced approach, like the energy bill that the House just passed,   recognizes that we can't conserve our way out of this problem, but we can't pump our way out either.  We have to do both," added Wamp.

Highlights of the energy package include:

-Strengthens our national security by reducing dependence on foreign energy sources

-Increases funding for programs to help low-income residents cover high energy costs

-Promotes a cleaner environment using renewable energy and alternative fueled vehicles

-Modernizes electricity infrastructure and protects consumers from unfair prices

-Sets stricter standards for energy use in federal buildings

-Provides private sector incentives to improve efficiency standards on electric products

-Improves regulation of nuclear and hydroelectric power

           -Promotes clean coal technologies

Since 2000, Wamp has served on the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee and in October of 2002, Congressman Wamp was one of only 14 Members of Congress to be awarded the Renewable Energy Leadership Award from the Renewable Energy Alliance, a coalition of America's most promising renewable energy industries.
