Wamp Supports All Student Athletes

July 8, 2002

No student should be discriminated against on the basis of gender in school athletics. Before Title IX, schools and universities could, and did provide more athletic opportunities for men. In 1972 Congress enacted Title IX of the Education Amendments, the federal mandate against sex discrimination in education. Congress used the broadest terms possible to signal loudly and clearly that gender no longer could dictate educational opportunities.

Thirty years later, there is no question that Title IX has opened doors previously closed to women and girls in high school and college sports. But, I have heard from many people over the past few years on both sides of this issue. Some believe that Title IX has resulted in an unfair quota system under which college men's teams are being abolished in order to accommodate women's sports.

As the father of two avid teenage athletes, a boy and a girl, I will continue to support programs that help all student-athletes achieve scholarships and make their dreams of competition a reality.
