Wamp Gets Demo of Cutting-Edge Homeland Security Technology

October 22, 2002

Because of the increasing possible threat of nuclear weapons being used by rogue nations against the United States, Congressman Zach Wamp (R-TN) wanted to learn about the technology being developed in Oak Ridge that can detect even the smallest amounts of radiation. Congressman Wamp visited NucSafe, an Oak Ridge company that develops various radiation-detection devices, to get a demonstration on how the equipment works and how it can be used here and abroad.

"These radiation-detection devices are cutting-edge and their applications are very versatile. The portable models can be taken overseas and used by weapons inspectors and the larger units can be used at military bases or any place where extra security might be needed," said Wamp. "It is always amazes me when I see the incredible technology that is being developed right here in Oak Ridge."

Wamp met with Lester Sideropoulos, Vice- President and COO of NucSafe and saw a demonstration of the "Guardian Portable Radiation Search Tool." The Guardian is available as a briefcase, a backpack or a wearable unit and is primarily used for detecting special nuclear materials by measuring neutrons and gamma rays. The neutron sensors are comprised of glass fibers that offer greater sensitivity than conventional "gas tubes."

NucSafe, LLP manufactures nuclear instruments, systems, and accessories for nuclear safeguards, nuclear security, and process controls.
