Competition Will Eventually Lower Cable Costs

March 3, 2004

Many folks have gotten in touch with me to share their frustration that services they have come to rely on, such as television, are becoming more expensive at a time when other technologies are becoming less expensive.  I agree with you that competition is the key to future success in the telecommunications industry.

When Congress passed the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the intent was to stimulate competition through deregulation and ultimately lower rates for consumers.  Unfortunately, the cable industry is not yet competitive enough and must be held more accountable on cost containment.  Cable prices are rising too quickly.

With the technological improvements in delivering high quality service, our country should be in a position to encourage greater competition and lower costs.  I will continue to look for ways to promote competition and relieve the burden on families paying such high monthly rates.
