Comp Time Bill Fails To Come To Vote

June 16, 2003

The hard working men and women who struggle each day to provide for their families have my strong admiration and support.  These workers are the backbone of America; their hard work fuels our economy.  Since many of these blue collar workers count on overtime pay to provide for their families, any legislation that could affect it must be carefully considered.

H.R. 1119, the Family Time Flexibility Act, allows employers to provide their employees the option of time off or overtime pay.   Many Members of Congress expressed their concern that this bill did not provide adequate safeguards to prevent employers from forcing workers to take time off rather than overtime.  As a result of this input, the House leadership has pulled the bill and a vote on this legislation is not expected.

Improving the lives of working families in Tennessee is one of my top priorities and I will keep their best interest in mind when considering legislation that could affect their standard of living.
