Legislation Would Label Allergen Content in Food

January 13, 2004
There are seven million Americans who suffer from food allergies, some of which can be deadly. We need to do what we can to help protect those Americans from ingredients in food that can harm them.

Consumers should have access to accurate, reliable information about the ingredients in the products they eat. The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act, H.R. 3684, would give consumers who have the most common food allergies this important information. It requires manufacturers to list the top eight food allergens in a clear, accurate and reliable way so consumers know what products to avoid. This bill has been referred to the House Commerce Committee. I share the goals of the authors of this bill and will follow it closely.
