Rep. Johnson Announces Job Training Grant For ISU

Bloomington. -  Rep. Timothy V. Johnson today announced the award of a $496,000 grant to Illinois State University for the training of displaced workers.

Most of the workers have been displaced as a result of layoffs at the Mitsubishi automobile manufacturing plant. ISU will provide small business development training to 50 dislocated workers and nursing training to 20 dislocated, underemployed and unemployed individuals.

It is expected that those completing the nursing training will be placed in employment within 90 days. Those completing the small business training will be placed in business-related jobs for which they are qualified, while others are expected to start their own businesses.

The grant covers a period of two years and is awarded through the U.S. Department of Labor.

“Losing one’s job is a wrenching experience that many of these people were completely unprepared for,” said Rep. Timothy V. Johnson, R-Urbana, who sponsored the grant. “We’re talking about hard-working people with families and high expectations for themselves and through no fault of their own have had their lives disrupted. To be able to assist them on their career paths is one of the highest callings of government.”
