Rep. Johnson Announces Senior Citizens' Grant

Mattoon, IL -  U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson today today announced the award of a $250,000 grant that will go toward the construction of a full-service senior citizen center in Coles County.

Rep. Johnson made the announcement at the Mattoon Senior Citizens Center. The grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will assist with the LifeSpan Center being planned by the Coles County Council on Aging. The center will consolidate services now offered in Coles County and house intergenerational activities such as adult daycare, a care-giving resource center, a technology center and numerous educational, recreational and wellness programs.

“We’re proud to be able to provide this assistance,” Rep. Johnson said. “This center will potentially provide vital services to thousands of people. They have given of themselves over the years and this kind of facility will provide a safety net for their needs now.”

Dee Braden, executive director of the Council on Aging, said the $250,000 appropriation is a central part of the foundation for the project.

“We are profoundly grateful to Congressman Johnson for his hard work on behalf of the LifeSpan Center, and his recognition of the degree of local support for this project,” Braden said. “Congressman Johnson has long been a champion for older adults, their loved ones and caregivers. He is acutely aware of the changing roles and concerns of adults, as well as recognizing the critical need to have new opportunities and challenges available on a local level.”
