Rep. Johnson Named “Friend of the National Parks”

Illinois Republican’s voting record on park issues earns NPCA Award

Washington, D.C. - The National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) today recognized U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson (IL-15) with a “Friend of the National Parks” award based on his pro-park voting record during the recently completed 108th Congress (2003-2204).  Rep. Johnson, along with 190 of his colleagues in the House of Representatives and 47 Senators received this distinction in a Capitol Hill ceremony.

“National parks provide Americans with large, open spaces where they can engage in outdoor sporting activities, improve personal health and fitness and enjoy the diverse natural wonders that make this country so unique,” said Johnson.  “It is one of my legislative priorities to protect our parks for present and future generations.  I am honored to receive this award for the second time in my congressional career and I intend to continue voting in the interest of our national parks.”

“These honored members of Congress represent a bipartisan group that has a solid commitment to preserving the country’s national parks for future generation,” said NPCA President Thomas Kiernan.  “Senators and Representatives on both sides of the aisle punctuated their words with votes in support of restoring and preserving our national parks.”

The “Friend of the National Parks” award was established in 1999 to track and publicize congressional members’ votes on significant national park issues.  NPCA examined six key House votes and five key Senate votes from the 108th Congress.  A complete list of the winning members of congress and vote descriptions is available online at www.npca.org/votingrecords.
