Tiahrt Supports Line Item Veto
Bill Reaffirms Republican Commitment to Fiscal Discipline

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Todd Tiahrt (R-Goddard) today voted for H.R. 4890, the Legislative Line Item Veto Act of 2006. The legislation gives the president increased authority to remove unnecessary or wasteful spending items from spending bills.

“I am pleased this bill will increase accountability in federal spending and discourage wasteful and unnecessary spending,” said Tiahrt. “House Republicans are once again demonstrating that we are the party that stands for fiscal discipline and reform.”

The legislation, among other things, allows the president 45 days to propose rescissions on spending bills he signs into law; requires Congress to act on the president’s proposed rescissions by requiring an up-or-down vote on the complete list; directs savings from congressionally approved rescissions to deficit reduction efforts; and helps address the problem of unnecessary entitlement spending.
