Tiahrt Supports Bill to Reduce Energy Costs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Todd Tiahrt (R-Goddard) today voted for H.R. 5254, the Refinery Permit Process Schedule Act. The legislation, which House Democrats defeated last month, passed the House on a 238-179 vote and would help reduce energy costs by streamlining the refinery permitting process while maintaining the opportunity for public input on permit applications. Tiahrt introduced similar legislation last year as part of the Republican efforts to lower gas prices.

“I am pleased we have finally been able to get this important legislation through the House this year,” said Tiahrt. “It is unfortunate a majority of my Democrat colleagues continue to oppose a measure that will lower energy prices by making it easier to increase refining capacity while ensuring protection of the environment.”

In 1981, there were 324 operating refineries in the United States. There are currently only 148 operating refineries, and a new refinery has not been built in the United States since 1976. Refining capacity has had an impact on gas prices as it is difficult for refineries to meet the needs of U.S. demand. Last year, the House of Representatives passed comprehensive legislation to encourage new refinery capacity and ban price-gouging. Every Democrat voted against the proposal.

“Families find it more difficult to make ends meet with higher gas prices, and businesses cannot grow without reliable, cost-efficient sources of energy. By passing this, we will not only stabilize our energy systems but also strengthen our businesses and create new jobs,” Tiahrt said.
