Tiahrt Supports Bill to Reduce Energy Costs
Democrats block legislation to help lower gas prices

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Todd Tiahrt (R-Goddard) today voted for H.R. 5254, the Refinery Permit Process Schedule Act. Although Republicans overwhelmingly supported the measure, the bill failed due to Democrat opposition. The legislation would have helped reduce energy costs by streamlining the refinery permitting process. Tiahrt introduced similar legislation last year as part of the Republican efforts to lower gas prices.

“I am extremely disappointed but not surprised by the Democrat opposition to lowering gas prices,” said Tiahrt. “Nancy Pelosi has apparently convinced most of her fellow Democrats that high gas prices are good for Democrat elections in November. Unfortunately, her political strategy has hurt American families, businesses and workers.”

In 1981, there were 324 operating refineries in the United States. There are currently only 148 operating refineries, and a new refinery has not been built in the United States since 1976. Refining capacity has had an impact on gas prices as it is difficult for refineries to meet the needs of U.S. demand. Last year, the House of Representatives passed comprehensive legislation to encourage new refinery capacity and ban price-gouging. Every Democrat voted against the proposal.

“Families find it more difficult to make ends meet with higher gas prices and businesses cannot grow without reliable, cost-efficient sources of energy. By passing legislation to streamline the permitting process and making it easier to increase refinery capacity, we will not only stabilize our energy systems but also strengthen our businesses and create new jobs. I am pleased 13 of my Democrat colleagues voted with me and my Republican colleagues to reduce the cost of gasoline,” Tiahrt said.
