D.C. and District Talk

" President's Statement on the Creation of the World War II Memorial in Washington
"Today I have signed into law H.R. 1696, a bill to expedite the construction of the World War II memorial in the District of Columbia. It is indeed fitting that this measure becomes law on Memorial Day.

This legislation will allow the Nation to express the appreciation due the World War II generation for their selfless sacrifices that preserved the freedoms we all enjoy. I commend the Congress for a truly bipartisan effort to expedite construction of the memorial.

Now that debate over the site and basic design is concluded, the time has come for all concerned with the creation of the memorial to act with the same determination and sense of common purpose so wonderfully displayed by those we honor. We must get the job done, so that those who served are able to see the Nation's permanent expression of remembrance and thanks."

" Memorial Dedication
I am happy to announce that the WWII Memorial will be dedicated here on Washington D.C. this weekend. This monument will honor what many have called "The Greatest Generation" and recognize the strength and dedication of those that proudly served our country both at home and abroad during this trying time for our nation. We are forever indebted to these men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice to their country, and I am pleased to see this memorial finally take shape on the National Mall. We will forever remember those that preserved freedom both at home and abroad and this week I will include in my newsletter several websites that celebrate these men and women as they are honored in Washington. As you may have seen, I have included an aerial picture of the Memorial. For more pictures and information I encourage you to visit the official website at http://www.wwiimemorial.com/.

" National WWII Memorial Reunion
Veterans from all over the U.S. were invited to come to the Mall during the days prior to the dedication to try and find friends and comrades from WWII. This link will allow you to view pictures from the reunion and other information as the weekend progresses http://www.folklife.si.edu/CFCH/WWII/WorldWarII.htm.

" Veterans History Project
I've mentioned this project in previous newsletters, but I feel that it is especially important to record the experiences of our Veterans for future generations. This link will tell you how you can participate in the project and stories from WWII veterans.
