Norwalk Mentoring Collaborative
Receives Department of Education Funding
for Mentoring Program
Washington, D.C. - The Norwalk Public Schools
will receive a $184,378 grant the U.S. Department of Education
to support their mentoring program, Congressman Christopher
Shays (R-Bridgeport) announced today. Norwalk will receive
this funding for three years.
“Mentoring provides positive relationships to help
guide children during their school years,” Shays said.
“This funding will help Norwalk maintain important mentoring
programs and I am grateful for this support.”
"Norwalk was one of the earliest cities to use mentoring
as a means to attack the Achievement Gap and eventually we
developed a 'best in the nation' program involving 800 mentors,"
said Norwalk Mayor Alex Knopp. "I want to thank Rep.
Shays for his diligence in helping secure this new grant because
these funds will help us extend the program to reach even
more at-risk children and involve even more adult mentors."
“On behalf of the collaborative, the Norwalk Public
Schools is very excited about receiving this grant. It will
allow us to increase mentoring services to the children in
the Norwalk community who need mentors," said Sheri McCready
of the Norwalk Public Schools.
The grant will increase the capacity and effectiveness of
mentoring programs in the city of Norwalk. The Norwalk mentoring
collaborative is a collaboration between Norwalk Public Schools,
the Connecticut Mentoring Partnership, Family & Children's
Agency and A.C.H.I.E.V.E. The funds will allow the Norwalk
mentor program to implement a year-round site-based mentoring
initiative.
The Department of Education’s Mentoring Programs are
designed to achieve one or more of the following goals: assist
children in receiving support and guidance from a mentor;
improve academic performance of children; improve interpersonal
relationships between children their peers, teachers, other
adults and family members; reduce the dropout rate; or reduce
children’s juvenile delinquency and involvement in gangs.
