Shays Announces Congressional
Art Competition
Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Christopher
Shays (R-Bridgeport) announced the 2005 Fourth District Congressional
Arts Competition, “An Artistic Discovery.”
“Having grown up in an arts family, I know how valuable
creative expression is for students’ growth,”
Shays said. “I encourage Fourth District high school
students to work with their art teachers and consider submitting
a piece to the Congressional Art Competition.” Shays
is Co-Chair of the Congressional Arts Caucus.
Each high school in the Fourth Congressional District has
the opportunity to submit five works of art. Entries must
be two-dimensional and no larger than 32 inches by 32 inches
framed.
Contestants chosen by their schools should deliver their
artwork and completed entry form to the Westport Arts Center
at 51 Riverside Avenue, Westport, Connecticut 06880 on one
of the following dates: Saturday, May 7 between Noon and 4:00
p.m. or May 9 - 11 between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
The winning artwork and two runners-up will be chosen by
a panel of judges from the area and announced at an exhibition
and reception. All participants, along with their families
and teachers, are invited to attend the reception at the Westport
Arts Center at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 14.
"An Artistic Discovery" began in 1982 as an attempt
to offset reductions in federal grants for arts programs by
giving creative students the chance to have their talents
recognized nationwide. Since then, more than 650,000 students
have participated in the competition, and the works of thousands
of young American artists have been showcased in a passageway
to the Capitol.
Beginning in June, the winning artwork of this year’s
competition will hang for one year beside works from other
congressional districts in the passageway between the House
office buildings and the United States Capitol.
The winner will receive round-trip transportation for one
to Washington, D.C. for the opening reception on Tuesday,
June 14, 2005. The ticket is compliments of Warren Travel.
Last year’s winner was Natalie Birinyi of Greens Farms
Academy. Her winning photograph is entitled “Dominican
Boy.” Her photo can be found here.
