Shays Statement on Ethics
Changes
Washington, D.C. - Last night, the House of
Representatives reversed rules changes made in January that
undermined the House ethics process and drastically curtailed
the ability of the Ethics Committee to investigate complaints.
Congressman Christopher Shays (R-Bridgeport) was one of only
three Republicans to cosponsor H. Res.131, a resolution offered
by the Ranking Member of the Ethics Committee to reinstate
the previous ethics rules. The following is Shays’ comment
on the Rules change:
“I am grateful that we have reinstated the more effective
rules and have a functioning Ethics Committee. This was the
right thing to do. I am confident that any remaining issues
can be worked out between Chairman Hastings and Ranking Member
Mollohan, who are both very ethical and principled men. I
am pleased we have taken this step forward.
“Now that the Ethics Committee is in working order
again, I hope it will not be used as a place to score political
points, but rather as a body that continues to make us all
proud to serve in the people's House.”
