Stamford’s Belltown
Fire Department Receives $16,103 from Department of Homeland
Security
Bridgeport, CT –Stamford’s Belltown Fire Department
will receive a $16,103 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from
the Department of Homeland Security, Congressman Christopher
Shays (R-CT) announced today.
The funding will support physical exams and Hepatitis B vaccinations
for 45 volunteer first responders.
“The health of our volunteer firefighters is key,”
Shays said. “This support will provide the check-ups
and vaccinations they need to ensure volunteer firefighters
are healthy, so they can offer their service to Stamford residents
and the Belltown Fire Department.”
“Ensuring our volunteer firefighters are healthy is
important to keeping the force safe and I am grateful for
this support,” said Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy.
“The U.S. Fire Administration recommends that all Firefighters,
both volunteer and career, undergo annual physicals. Receiving
this grant will allow us to provide consistent firefighter
physicals in accordance with NFPA standards and to promote
the health and fitness among our members,” explained
Belltown Fire Department’s Captain Alan Shaw. “The
Hepatitis B vaccinations will allow us to better protect our
first responders as they work at the scene of Emergency Medical
and rescue related incidents.”
The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants
(AFG) is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs
of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical services
organizations to enhance their ability to protect the public
and fire service personnel from fire and related hazards.
