Shays Announces Family Self
Sufficiency Grant for Norwalk Housing Authority
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Christopher Shays (R-Bridgeport)
announced today the Norwalk Housing Authority would receive
$190,890 in funding from the Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) for the Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) program.
These funds will be used to pay FSS Program Coordinators and
Homeownership Program Coordinators that link program participants
to training and supportive services necessary to achieve economic
independence and self sufficiency.
Shays, a member of the House Financial Services Subcommittee
on Housing and Community Opportunity stated, “The Family
Self Sufficiency Program provides an important service to
Bridgeport. I am grateful for this support from the Department
of Housing and Urban Development to help more residents of
the Fourth District become economically independent.”
"I am extremely gratified that the Housing Authority
has received this grant from HUD,” commented Mayor Dick
Moccia. “Funds such as this that encourage independence
and self initiative can only benefit the City as we move forward.
On behalf of myself and the City I extend my thanks to Congressman
Shays for his assistance in obtaining these funds."
“The Norwalk Housing Authority is committed to helping
families move ahead,” stated Curtis Law, Executive Director
of the Norwalk Housing Authority. “We are very grateful
for this grant that makes it possible for us to assist families
as they take the next step towards economic independence and
self-sufficiency.”
FSS is a HUD program that encourages communities to develop
local strategies to help voucher families obtain employment
that will lead to economic independence and self-sufficiency.
Housing agencies (PHAs) work with welfare agencies, schools,
businesses, and other local partners to develop a comprehensive
program that gives participating FSS family members the skills
and experience to enable them to obtain employment that pays
a living wage.
