$40,000 National Endowment
for the Arts Grant to Encourage Reading in
Southwestern Connecticut
Washington, D.C. – Bridgeport will receive a $40,000
matching grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)
to engage residents of all ages to discuss the book To Kill
a Mockingbird, Congressman Christopher Shays (R-Bridgeport)
announced today. As part of an initiative dubbed The Big Read
by the NEA, this grant is designed to restore reading to the
center of American culture.
“I am grateful for the NEA’s support in awarding
this grant because it will help address a problem of declining
literary reading in our communities,” said Shays. “To
Kill a Mockingbird wonderful literature and am important piece
of American culture. I am so pleased residents will have the
opportunity to read and the forum to discuss this book within
the community.”
Approximately 160 organizations in communities across the
United States will be selected to participate in The Big Read.
Each community will participate for approximately one month
beginning with a kick-off event to launch the program locally.
Events will be devoted specifically to the book – panel
discussions, author reading, and the like and film screenings,
theatrical readings, and other events that engage the community.
